Temporary Strainers for Short-Term Filtration

What is Temporary Strainer?

The temporary strainer is a startup strainer, also known as a conical strainer or basket strainer, and is installed in a system to remove unwanted debris from the process stream. These strainers come in cone, plate as well as basket shape.

Temporary Strainers are used for the start-up of new or revamped piping systems, providing inexpensive protection for costly valves, pumps, meters, and other mechanical equipment.

Materials of Construction

Materials for the construction of a strainer should be compatible with the fluid. The most commonly used materials of construction are :

- Stainless Steel: 304, 306, 316, 316L etc.

- Monel Metal

Our emporary strainers which are fabricated by wire mesh, perforated plate, sintered mesh, pleated mesh. Please pay more attention to the viscosity.flow rate, corrosiveness, temperature, and pressure drop of your liquid before you select.

Dimensional Standards

Dimensions of conical strainers are manufacturer-specific. The main disc of conical strainers is made to fit between flanges of rating as per main pipe specification.

What is the purpose of a temporary strainer?

Temporary Strainers are used for start-up of new or revamped piping systems, providing inexpensive protection for costly valves, pumps, meters, and other mechanical equipment.

They are typically used during the initial start-up phase of a system, after maintenance work, or in any situation where permanent strainers still need to be installed or are being serviced.

Temporary strainers are designed to provide short-term protection for piping systems during initial start-up or after maintenance. They are installed between flanges to capture debris like welding slag, rust, pipe scale, and other construction residues that can damage equipment such as pumps, valves, and meters. Easy to install and remove, these strainers are typically used until the system is fully operational and free of contaminants.

Temporary strainers can offer an effective solution to safeguard sensitive components during commissioning or maintenance periods.

What are the different types of temporary strainers?

Our temporary strainers are available in cone, basket, and plate shapes to satisfy diverse applications. The temporary basket strainer features slightly higher pressure loss than the cone strainer, while the plate one shows the highest pressure drop.

1. Temporary Basket type strainers(nicknamed witch hat strainer) serve to safeguard expensive components like valves and pumps in new or updated piping systems, offering cost-effective protection during the initial operational phase.

2. Temporary Cone type strainers are used for the start-up of new or revamped piping systems, providing inexpensive protection for costly valves, pumps, meters, and other mechanical equipment.

3.Temporary Plate type strainers are designed for temporary use in a wide range of piping systems, used for the start-up of new or revamped piping systems.

What is the difference between a temporary strainer and a permanent strainer?

Strainers may have temporary or permanent installations.

Temporary strainers remove maintenance or construction debris on startup. Typically they stay in service for a week after startup. Permanent strainers remain in the process to cope with ongoing issues with solids or extreme sensitivity of equipment.

The medium of Temporary strainers should flow from the outside to the inside. After a nominal period of operation Temporary strainers are usually replaced with a permanent strainer of a finer retention.

The temporary strainer is typically used during the initial start-up phase of a system, after maintenance work, or in any situation where permanent strainers still need to be installed or are being serviced.
